Meet the Founder
In February, 1993, Arlington Laboratory was founded by Daniel R. Judd, who received his electrical engineering degree from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA). While at MIT, he concentrated in EM radiation, minored in writing, published research in robotics control software algorithms, and was inducted to the Eta Kappa Nu honor society for outstanding scholastic achievement in the EE field. Mr. Judd went on to spend eleven years designing measurement and control instrumentation before founding Arlington Laboratory.
Dan has expertise in low-level analog circuitry and microcontroller-based digital circuitry. His DC/DC power conversion designs have set records for size, efficiency, stability, and ripple. He holds electrical circuit patents related to process interfacing and temperature compensation, and physics patents for a revolutionary first-principles method for the precise measurement of gas mass flow rate. Dan is also an accomplished software programmer whose work is always distinguished by performance, efficiency, scalability, and maintainability. Although proficient in many languages, he is globally recognized for some of his creations in ANSI C programming for embedded applications. Dan’s proficiency in mathematics has yielded advancements in self-tuning, adaptive multidimensional curve-fit, embedded control applications, and robust models for agency approved safety probability calculations based on universally accepted block code theory.
Based on his 3 years as VP Engineering for MKS Instruments, Mr. Judd decided right from the start that Arlington Laboratory would maintain agility by keeping lean; managing resource loading with a network of approved subcontractors and partner service providers. This has proven to be an effective strategy for increasing bandwidth without increasing overhead. Clients deal with a single supplier while leveraging the resources of a well-established and proven global network of experts.
Arlington Laboratory has its beginnings in the semiconductor manufacturing industry where state-of-the-art technologies and cost-effective reliability are prime motivators. Over time, word of Arlington Laboratory’s reputation spread and so did growth. Arlington Laboratory now serves many markets, including: industrial, automation, process, semiconductor, automotive, metrology, security and power generation.
Arlington Laboratory was responsible for starting the Sensor Bus Standards program at Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). Mr. Judd served as chairman of the Sensor Bus Subcommittee (1993-2008) and published, with the help of over 100 international members, the “E54 Sensor Bus Suite of Standards”. These standards paved the way for the adoption of device-level control networking on semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Arlington Laboratory’s electronic hardware and embedded software designs are powering today’s communications and control evolution in the semiconductor manufacturing industry and the process automation industry. Our designs are running in over a million devices in the field today.
A control network technical analysis report sponsored by SEMATECH and published by Arlington Laboratory has been credited for the decision by one of the world’s largest semiconductor front-end equipment supplier to fully commit all of their 300mm platforms to the described control network platform.
Throughout the mid 1990’s, Arlington Laboratory was on contract directly to the board of directors of Tylan General. We were instrumental in restructuring the Tylan technology base for IPO, and ultimately, the buyout of the company by Millipore Microelectronics.
Arlington Laboratory founded the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA) Semiconductor Special Interest Group responsible for publishing a set of industry specific software models, developing a set of industry specific implementation guidelines, and establishing an accompanying independent conformance test center growing to over 150 members worldwide.
Arlington Laboratory’s CTO, Daniel R. Judd, founded and chaired: SEMI Sensor Bus program (’93-’08); ODVA Semiconductor Special Interest Group (’96-’09); and EtherCAT Technology Group Semiconductor Technical Working Group (’11-’13). Each represented hundreds of members worldwide focused on device-level networking for equipment and process control. Mr. Judd is personally responsible for hundreds of pages of technical specifications, industry-specific implementation guidelines and conformance test methods.
Today, Mr. Judd serves as United States National Committee appointed expert for the IEC Technical Committee 65, Industrial process measurement, control and automation (’05-present) active in working groups for: protocol, installation, and functional safety. He is recipient of the 2018 prestigious IEC 1906 Award as “an important technical contributor to developments on extended models and equations”.
